Private Mole Checks in Poole, Bournemouth & Dorset

Dr Sumit Aggarwal
MBBS, MRCGP (2015), PG Diploma Dermatology, GPwSI Dermatology, Cert NSV

Mole checks are provided by Dr Sumit Aggarwal, an experienced GP with dermatology-focused qualifications and clinical experience. The appointment is designed to assess the lesion carefully, explain warning signs clearly and advise whether reassurance, monitoring, referral, biopsy or minor surgery may be appropriate.

What happens during a mole check?

During the appointment, the mole or skin lesion will be assessed carefully, including relevant history such as how long it has been present, whether it has changed, and whether there are symptoms such as bleeding, crusting, itching or pain.

Where appropriate, dermatoscopic assessment may be used to help examine the lesion more closely. You will be advised on whether monitoring, reassurance, referral, biopsy or minor surgery may be appropriate.

When should you book a mole check?

Book a review if a mole or pigmented lesion has changed, looks unusual or is causing symptoms.

  • A new or changing mole
  • A mole that has changed in size, shape or colour
  • A mole that is bleeding, crusting or not healing
  • A lesion that looks different from your other moles
  • A pigmented lesion you are worried about
  • A miole with irregular edges, blurred outline or patchy colour
  • A skin lesion that looks different from your other moles
  • A lesion your GP has advised you to have checked

What to Look For in a Changing Mole

The ABCDE rule highlights important features that should prompt medical assessment.

A – Asymmetry: one half does not match the other in shape or appearance.

B – Border: edges are irregular, ragged, blurred or uneven.

C – Colour: variation in colour, darkening or patchiness can be important.

D – Diameter: a lesion increasing in size over time should be assessed.

E – Evolving: any noticeable change in size, shape, colour, symptoms or overall appearance should be checked.

Suspicious or changing lesions

A mole check is an assessment appointment. It is designed to assess moles, pigmented lesions or skin marks and advise on the most appropriate next step.

Cryotherapy, including CryoPen treatment, is not used for suspicious pigmented lesions or moles that need proper diagnostic assessment.

If a mole or skin lesion appears suspicious, uncertain or unsuitable for reassurance alone, we will explain this clearly. Referral, monitoring, biopsy, minor surgery or specialist dermatology assessment may be advised depending on the findings.

Any biopsy, removal, minor surgery, further treatment or onward referral may involve separate fees.

Mole Check Fees

Focused mole or skin lesion check – £135

Suitable for one main mole, pigmented lesion or skin mark that you would like assessed.

Full body mole check – £210

Suitable if you would like a broader review of multiple moles or skin lesions, with clear advice on monitoring, warning signs and whether referral or further assessment is needed.

Mole Check FAQs

What should prompt me to book a private mole check?

You should consider booking if you have a new or changing mole, a mole that has changed in size, shape or colour, a lesion that is bleeding, crusting or not healing, or any skin lesion you are worried about.

Can you assess new pigmented lesions?

Yes. New pigmented lesions, dark marks or skin lesions that look different from your usual moles can be assessed. If the lesion appears suspicious or uncertain, we will advise on the most appropriate next step.

Can you remove my mole on the day?

A mole check is primarily an assessment appointment. If a mole or lesion needs biopsy, removal or minor surgery, this may need to be arranged separately depending on the clinical findings, suitability and appointment availability.

Is CryoPen used for moles?

No. CryoPen treatment is not used for suspicious pigmented lesions or moles that need proper diagnostic assessment. CryoPen may be suitable for selected benign lesions, but not for moles where diagnostic assessment, biopsy or referral may be needed.

Will I be told whether monitoring or referral is needed?

Yes. After assessment, we will explain whether reassurance, monitoring, referral, biopsy, minor surgery or specialist dermatology review is the most appropriate next step.

How much does a private mole check cost?

A focused mole or skin lesion check is £135. A full mole check is £210. If biopsy, removal, minor surgery, referral or additional treatment is needed, this will be discussed separately.

What is the difference between a focused mole check and a full mole check?

A focused mole check is suitable for one main mole, pigmented lesion or skin mark that you would like assessed. A full mole check is suitable if you would like a broader review of multiple moles or skin lesions, with advice on monitoring, warning signs and whether further assessment is needed.
