Private Joint Injections in Poole, Bournemouth & Dorset
Dr Sumit Aggarwal
MBBS, MRCGP (2015), PG Diploma Dermatology, GPwSI Dermatology, Cert NSV
Joint injection care is assessment-led and provided by Dr Sumit Aggarwal. Suitability depends on the joint involved, symptoms, examination findings, medical history and whether steroid or hyaluronic acid injection treatment is clinically appropriate.
Joint injections may be suitable for some patients with pain, inflammation or stiffness affecting joints or soft tissue areas. Suitability is assessed carefully before any injection is offered.
Assessment-led joint injections
Joint injections are only offered after clinical assessment. Your appointment will include a review of your symptoms, medical history, affected joint or soft tissue area, previous treatments and whether injection treatment is suitable.
If an injection is not appropriate, we will explain why and advise on other options such as physiotherapy, imaging, medication review, onward referral or alternative treatment.
Joint-Specific Treatment Pathways
Steroid Joint Injections
Steroid injections may be considered for selected joint or soft tissue problems where inflammation is contributing to pain, stiffness or reduced function. Suitability depends on the diagnosis, examination findings, medical history and any relevant previous treatment.
Steroid injections are not suitable for every condition, and some patients may need imaging, physiotherapy, blood tests or specialist referral before treatment is considered.
Hyaluronic acid injection options
GP Private Services offers selected hyaluronic acid injection pathways where clinically appropriate, including Cingal, Monovisc and Orthovisc.
- Cingal – for selected knee osteoarthritis cases
- Monovisc- for selected knee and shoulder problems where clinically appropriate
- Orthovisc Small Joint Injections
- Orthovisc may be considered for selected smaller joints, including thumb, finger and big toe joints.
If you are unsure which injection type is suitable, book a suitability consultation first. The most appropriate option can be discussed after assessment.
Important Safety Note
Joint injections are only offered after clinical assessment and where they are considered clinically appropriate. Suitability depends on the diagnosis, joint involved, symptoms, examination findings, medical history, medication use and any relevant previous investigations.
Some patients may require imaging, physiotherapy, medication review, blood tests, specialist referral or alternative treatment before an injection is considered. If an injection is not suitable, this will be explained clearly and appropriate next steps will be discussed.
GP Private Services does not provide emergency care. If you have severe pain, sudden swelling, fever, redness, injury, inability to weight-bear, or feel acutely unwell, please seek urgent medical advice through NHS 111, 999 or your nearest emergency department as appropriate.

Joint Injection FAQs
Do I need an assessment before a joint injection?
Yes. Joint injections are assessment-led. The clinician will review your symptoms, medical history and suitability before deciding whether an injection is appropriate.
What types of joint injections are available?
Options may include steroid joint injections and selected hyaluronic acid injections such as Cingal, Monovisc or Orthovisc, depending on clinical suitability.
Can I have an injection on the same day?
Same-day injection may be possible in suitable cases, but this depends on the assessment, diagnosis, safety considerations and availability of the appropriate treatment.
Are joint injections suitable for everyone?
No. Some patients may be better suited to physiotherapy, imaging, medication review, onward referral or alternative treatment. Suitability will be assessed carefully before proceeding.
What is the difference between steroid and hyaluronic acid injections?
Steroid injections are usually used where inflammation is contributing to pain or stiffness. Hyaluronic acid injections may be considered for selected joint problems, particularly some osteoarthritis cases. The most suitable option depends on assessment and clinical suitability.
Do I need imaging before a joint injection?
Not always, but some patients may need an X-ray, ultrasound scan, MRI report or specialist review before an injection is considered. This will depend on the joint, symptoms and clinical findings.
