What are skin tags?

Skin tags are small, soft, usually harmless skin growths that often occur around the neck, underarms, eyelids, under the breasts, groin or skin folds. They can sometimes catch on clothing, jewellery or shaving, or become irritated.

Assessment before skin tag removal

Before treatment, the skin tag or lesion will be assessed to check whether it appears suitable for removal. If the lesion is pigmented, changing, bleeding, crusting, painful, uncertain in appearance or not clearly a skin tag, treatment may not be offered and a mole check, referral, biopsy or minor surgery may be advised instead.

Skin tag removal options

Suitable skin tags may be treated using CryoPen O+ cryotherapy or another appropriate minor procedure depending on the size, site, appearance and clinical assessment.

The most suitable option will be discussed during your appointment, including expected aftercare, possible healing time and risks such as irritation, blistering, pigment change, scarring or incomplete response.

Skin Tag Removal FAQs

Are skin tags harmless?

Skin tags are usually harmless benign skin growths, but any lesion that is changing, bleeding, pigmented, painful or uncertain in appearance should be assessed before treatment is considered.

Can skin tags be treated in one visit?

Many suitable benign skin tags can be assessed and treated in the same appointment, where clinically appropriate.

How are skin tags removed?

Suitable skin tags may be treated with CryoPen O+ cryotherapy or another appropriate minor procedure depending on size, site, appearance and clinical assessment.

Will skin tag removal leave a scar?

Any skin procedure can leave a mark or scar. Possible effects such as redness, blistering, pigment change, scarring or incomplete response will be discussed where relevant.

What if the lesion is not a skin tag?

If the lesion does not appear to be a straightforward benign skin tag, treatment may not be offered. A mole check, referral, biopsy, minor surgery or specialist dermatology assessment may be advised instead.
