What Are Actinic Keratoses?

Actinic keratoses are rough, scaly or dry patches of sun-damaged skin. They are more common on sun-exposed areas such as the face, scalp, ears, neck, forearms and backs of the hands.

They are often low-grade, but they need proper assessment because some lesions can look similar to early skin cancers or may need monitoring, prescription treatment or referral.

Important points before treatment is considered

  • Actinic keratoses are assessed first.
  • Only selected low-grade lesions are treated.
  • Thick, painful, bleeding or changing lesions may need referral.
  • Clear aftercare and safety-netting advice is provided.

Treatment options

Selected acrtinic keratosis may be treated with CryoPen O+ cryotherapy or another appropriate minor procedure depending on the size, thickness, site, symptoms and clinical assessment.

The most suitable approach will be discussed during your appointment, including expected healing, aftercare and possible risks such as redness, blistering, pigment change, scarring, incomplete response or recurrence.

Selected Actinic Keratosis Treatment FAQs

Are actinic keratoses dangerous?

Many are low-grade, but they should be assessed properly because some can change over time or look similar to early skin cancers. Advice is given on treatment, monitoring or referral where appropriate.

Can CryoPen O+ treat actinic keratoses?

Selected low-grade actinic keratoses may be suitable for CryoPen O+ treatment after clinical assessment. Treatment is not offered if the lesion looks suspicious, thickened, painful, bleeding, ulcerated or uncertain.

Can several actinic keratoses be treated in one visit?

Sometimes, yes. This depends on the number, size, site and appearance of the lesions. If there are many areas of sun damage, a different treatment plan or referral may be more appropriate.

When should I book a mole or skin lesion review instead?

Book a mole or skin lesion review if the lesion is changing, bleeding, painful, crusting, ulcerated, unusually dark, rapidly growing or uncertain in appearance. In these cases, treatment may not be appropriate until the lesion has been properly assessed.
